                                    INDIAN GURUKUL SYSTEM

The term “Gurukul” is derived from Sanskrit, where “Guru” means teacher or master, and “Kul” means family or home.

GURU + KUL = Teacher Home/Family

Practical Learning: The Gurukul system emphasized experiential learning. Students learned through observation, participation, and practical application of knowledge.

Discipline and Lifestyle:

• Simple Living: Gurukul life promoted a simple and disciplined lifestyle. Students were expected to follow a daily routine, including tasks like fetching water, collecting firewood, and performing other chores.
• Gurukul Routine: The daily routine typically included meditation, physical exercises, and various learning sessions. Students also participated in the upkeep of the Gurukul.

Ceremonies and Rituals:

• Gurudakshina: Upon completing their education, students offered a Gurudakshina, a symbolic gesture of gratitude, to their Guru. This could be in the form of service, material goods, or other offerings.

Spiritual and Moral Education:

• The Gurukul system aimed at the holistic development of an individual, focusing not only on academic knowledge but also on character building and moral values.
• Students were taught to live a disciplined and virtuous life.

Curriculum and Subjects:

• The curriculum in Gurukuls was comprehensive, covering a wide range of subjects including Vedas, Upanishads, philosophy, literature, mathematics, astronomy, music, and more.
